Day 7 – Helsinki

Today I will get the catamaran from Tallinn to Helsinki operated by Tallink and Silja Line at 1330-1530

For information on visit My Helsinki

Helsinki was a surprise as I expected it to look more like a Scandinavian city but actually it looks rather like pictures I’ve seen of St Petersburg especially the Presidential Palace and buildings around the harbour area.

Day 7 Helsinki

The Finnish Orthodox Uspenski Cathedral is very distinctive and an icon of the city. It is on a hillside so it is quite noticeable from a distance. I have chosen this for today’s picture

A Helsinki card is also available which is quite pricey at £45 but it covers a lot. It does, like most cities include transportation and the hop on hop off bus which can also be bought separately but there are also a lot of museums included and Helsinki has lots of them! There are some unusual ones such as Suerasaari Open-Air museum, the hotel and restaurant museum, there are several art museums, a photography museum and a design museum.

I particularly want to revisit the harbour area which has a nice market selling fresh fruit and vegetables, crafts and clothes. There are also pleasure boats from the harbour to explore the Stromma Canal, included on the Helsinki Card

Finland is the home of the Moomins and of course they have found a way of showcasing the best of the Moomins with the shop at the airport  which I will visit on the way to my next destination and they have also opened a cafe in Helsinki so even the smallest members of the family are amused.

Helsinki isn’t a cheap destination, although accommodation on the whole is quite reasonable compared to Stockholm and Copenhagen. Helsinki is not often thought of as a stand alone city break but it works very well with Tallinn as it is only a short ferry ride between the two and as the language is quite similar they are quite closely linked although very different in appearance and character. It also works well with Finnish Lapland and Northern Lights holidays as flights don’t always connect same day. Many Baltic cruises stop in Helsinki too.
