Day 76 - Victoria.jpg

Victoria is the capital of Vancouver Island, a popular stop on Alaska cruise itineraries and a really pretty place

Today’s picture is Butchart Gardens which is over 100 years old. It is absolutely gorgeous, flowers as far as the eyes can see and smell, and as night fell we walked around the twinkling lights and watched the firework display, but flowers don’t just stop in Butchart Gardens, flowers are everywhere, there are hanging baskets overflowing, window boxes and manicured lawns.

The best way to get around Victoria is simply to walk. It is lovely and flat and so easy to walk around. You can also do the tourist thing and take a horse and carriage or there are buses too.

It is lovely just to walk around the Inner Harbour and the Parliament Buildings. These are lit up at night. We stayed right on the Inner Harbour at the famous and very classic “The Empress” which is an attraction in itself and afternoon tea is legendary but also has a very high price tag. Whales in various guises, sculptures, topiary can be seen everywhere to represent one of British Columbia’s most popular activities, Whale watching and you can do this from the harbour.

Totem poles are mostly in Thunderbird Park, including one of the world’s tallest at 127ft but a few can be found dotted around the streets as well . Each of these are completely different and all in bright colours and feature typically quite scary faces and eagles.

Vancouver Island isn’t just Victoria and there is a lot of hiking, biking, turquoise lakes, animals, lush green forests and nature trails around the island. It is difficult to describe how the good the air feels in Canada.
